Everyone complains. Sure, there are a few people who think life is amazing 24/7, but the rest of us, we complain at least occasionally. Maybe it’s about the heat or the cold, or the car or our kids or the traffic or cooking or clean up; we complain. It’s the little stuff of life that can sometimes feel like the big stuff.
“I hate my life.”
It’s something that I hear often, and whether you’re willing to admit it or not, everyone has passing moments when it feels like life sucks. It doesn’t mean you (or I) hate everything, it means we need to make a change. We need to change the way we see the minutiae and the way we internalize our daily experiences.
I read a lot, and in the most recent novel I finished, the main character used to complain about daily life too. The kids were a pain to wake in the morning, work was annoying, and nobody picked up after themselves. Then, remember this is fiction, her daughter was abducted and killed, and she wished that the worst things in her life were those small things.
The problem, or maybe it’s the excuse, for most people is time. They tell me they don’t have the time to change their lives because they are busy every second of every day, getting things done, worrying about the future, and slogging through it all.
Doesn’t sound great to me.
You Can Create a Deeply Satisfying and Fulfilling Life
Here’s what you need to know: Creating a fulfilling life starts with one choice followed by one small action at a time. This is not a “do it all or bust” moment.
This is also not a list of 101 things to do today. See what calls to you; you know where to start. If you want a more fulfilling life now, instead of waiting for a random time in the future when everything will magically be different, start with one.

- Use your good plates, wear your special occasion jewelry, don’t wait for a celebration. Celebrate today.
- Toss the old clothes in the back of your closet that you’re hoping will fit again someday.
- Go somewhere by yourself. A cafe, the movies… bring a book or people watch and breathe.
- Create a vision board or at least jot down what you want to create in your life. It’s the first step to making it happen.

This list is not a panacea, but I promise you if you want a more satisfying, happier, or fulfilling life, you can do it. Why wait another minute?
This list could have been double in length.
What did I miss? Where will you start?

Hi Alli,
What a list! I love #1 of course yet I must say that the brilliance of your list is that each element on it leads to something new. So beyond the happiness that each brings in the moment, the true happiness comes from the potential that each taps!
Bravo.

Thanks so much, Kate. There are so many different things we can do to create a more fulfilling life. The key is getting started somewhere instead of settling for life as-is.

Fantastic list Alli! I especially love #42-do something that scares you and grow. I find that taking the first step to tackle a new or unfamiliar project is the most energizing step. It gives me confidence and great fulfillment. Will share!
Alli Polin says
I love that you help people to do that so well because you’re willing to do it yourself. I too love the feeling of a good stretch and a good challenge.
Thanks, Terri!

Alli,
Could I just do one each day for the next 100 days and not in any particular order? I’ll just pick one that appeals for today, check it off and choose another, different one for tomorrow. Or I suppose it’s OK to rinse and repeat, yes? Or, looking again at the list I might be bold enough to do more than one on the same day. Obviously, some will take longer than others. Regardless, I did manage a few today and I thank you for such great reminders because I did not take time to stretch and exercise today. Clearly, this much about intentions and moving in the “right” direction. Part of your genius, my friend.
I am blessed with time to do what I want, when and where I choose, as well as with whom, so life is indeed rich and full. Just returned from a week’s road trip and feeling quite fulfilled at the moment. More change in the air coming and it’s all good, at least as far as I can see today. Three moves in three years not recommended for most people but we are somewhat peripatetic at this stage.

What a great list! You’ve done a amazing job putting this together…I doubt you’ll be surprised by my favorites: 3-5! That said, it is so important to listen for ways that our heart yearns to move in a direction that will fulfill us. It’s hard work, though, because it’s hard to filter the noise of the world…
